Pokerstars Mobile

This review of the PokerStars app for mobile phones begins with a product comparison:

This is followed up with a full review of the PokerStars bonuses and loyalty scheme.

Compare PokerStars Mobile with the Best

PokerStars’ apps are directed fairly and squarely at the smartphone and tablet poker markets. Its apps won’t work on smaller screen phones, they won’t work on Blackberrys and Nokia phones and they won’t make you a cup of coffee in the early hours of the morning. What they will do is give you all but the most fine tuning-type features wrapped up in a slick poker package.

The iPhone App

The PokerStars app for iPad 2s, iPad3s, iPad Air and iPhones (basically, any device that runs on iOS is compatible). This app ushered in a new wave of quality multi-player real money poker software for portable devices when it was released in early 2012. It might not have been the first but it set the bar higher than the rest by making more features available than any other.

For some reason, many operators have focused more on making apps for the Android OS. In part, this is why the PokerStars iPhone app is still just about the best out there: apps like the one from Switch Poker may be just as good but the player pool is still small; bwin’s  player pool is big but its app disappoints.

The Android App

The competition between makers of native apps for the Android OS is more urgent, although fierce might be too strong a word. Here too, PokerStars’ app for Android performs well and its features outstrip much of the competition:

  • Cash / ring games at many different stakes from X to Y
  • Sit’n’go mobile poker tournaments
  • Access to freeroll tourneys
  • Multi-tabling (the ability to play up to 4 tables at the same time)

There aren’t too many poker sites offering sit and go tournaments for mobiles. PokerStars’s tournaments are stellar, but if you’re looking to find other Android poker apps that offer this kind of tournament, you can also have a look at the RedKings app.

Other Platforms

No PokerStars app for Blackberry phones or Playbooks is currently available. The same is true for devices running the Windows Phone operating system, like many Nokia handsets do. However, sites that are similar to PokerStars have been quick to fill the gaps:

Note: the real money PokerStars app is currently only available to mobile phone poker players in the UK and a few other European countries.

PokerStars Review

The genuine danger with big sites like PokerStars is that they come to rely too much on their name to attract new players. It can pay to take a close look at these sites’ welcome bonus packages and points systems.

PokerStars offers newcomers a pretty sweet welcome bonus of 100% cash match on the 1st deposit. Other than that, there are a wide range of special bonuses and promotions (such as free cash, weekly and monthly promotions etc.) – new promos are added frequently, so keep your eyes peeled for the best offers!

Poker bonuses and loyalty are closely linked: to receive your bonus cash you typically have to play in real money tournaments and / or stay in cash games long enough to at least see the flop. In doing so the site will take a percentage of what you wager as rake. A good way to compare the deals offered by different sites is to look at how much you need to give to the site in rake in order to collect bonus money. This ratio can vary greatly from site to site.

At PokerStars the ratio is just over 3:1, which the same as RedKings. At sites like bwin and Bet365 the ratio is a little lower but not by much.

Contributions to rake are turned into points and as well as earning you cash bonuses, PokerStars points (PPs) also earn you other privileges.
